As December approaches our minds turn to the "silly season" and the frenzy of social events and shopping as we attempt to find the perfect gifts for friends and family. It is a time of rushing and hasting. It is a time of celebration and parties and many church events!
Amongst all the hustle and bustle, we have decided in our growth group to stop and dwell on Luke 1:1-2:15 to think about the true meaning of this season - Jesus Christ born in Bethlehem by Mary through the Holy Spirit. Jesus, Son of the Most High. Jesus who is great among all peoples. Jesus who is God.
The narrative begun last night for our group. It involved two appearances of the angel Gabriel to an old priest and a young girl. It involved two declarations of the impending miraculous births of sons - John and Jesus. The first great and the second greater still. It involved doubt that resulted in the muting of Zechariah. It involved the incredible response of Mary who fully trusts her God in the most amazing situation.
We are looking forward to continuing on the road to Bethlehem with our group in the coming weeks. I hope that you too might be encouraged to return to the original Christmas story in the coming month, escape some of the hustle and bustle and be amazed at the ways in which God has worked.
